Dipping the newspaper strips

Okay, guys! Now that you have your paste, you want to use your newspaper strips. Here are a couple things I've figured out.

Ripping your newspaper strips:

Unfold the newspaper and rip into strips; no need to use scissors!

  • Small strips are about 1 inch wide
  • Medium strips are about 2-3 inches wide
  • Large strips are about 4 inches wide

I have been using medium and large strips for the body parts, and small strips for the heads. The larger you use, the harder it is to dip and the more mess you make! However, it does save time depending on your work space.

Dipping your newspaper strips:

1) Take a strip and dip ONE side into the paste in your mixing bowl; it is almost like you are laying the strip on top of your paste to get that side wet. Do not dunk the whole strip!

2) Hold the strip vertically over the bowl with one hand.

3) Take your other hand and run it down the strip, removing the excess. Leave the excess on your hand!!!

4) Flip the strip around to the dry side.

5) Run the excess from your hand down the strip.

This should leave you with a strip that has paste on both sides but is not too soggy to work with. This will also ensure that you have some paste on your hands -- this is a good thing! After you start putting the strips on your mold, you can smooth as you go with the paste from your hands. Completely dry hands will rip the newspaper from your mold, which sucks.

6) Last, put the strip on whatever you are making -- a hand, a foot, a leg or whatever! Repeat this step about 4,000 times until it resembles...something Haunted-House related.
